Lamborghini SUV I can’t talk about likely arriving in 2017

Earlier this month, I signed a piece of paper promising not to talk about something an automaker showed me and several dozen other people. Yesterday, the chief executive of Lamborghini told a German newspaper that the Italian supercar maker would very much like to build an SUV by the year 2017. Once you start lifting lids on embargoes, they have a funny way of leaking out.

Lamborghini Chief Executive Stephan Winkelmann spilled only a few secrets in describing his plans for a third model beyond the Gallardo and Aventador, telling the paper: "An SUV would be the first Lamborghini for everyday use, not just for the race track or weekends. We would have the opportunity to win new customers."

According to Handelsblatt, given the lead time for Volkswagen's board to approve a new entry, the Lambo SUV wouldn't be on the road until 2017. And the reason Lamborghini wants an SUV is no secret; with the runaway success of the Porsche Cayenne, every European luxury automaker realizes there's a booming market among the world's wealthiest buyers for raised people movers, even if brands like Bentley may struggle to figure out exactly how to design one.
